Dear friends, many thanks to all of you for the unforgettable weekend and the celebration of running with the participation of athletes from 69 countries! This year Lattelecom Riga Marathon joined 25 931 athlete from 69 countries of the world, whereas Rimi Children's marathon preceding on Saturday to the big celebration joined 7400 of the youngest athletes.
The largest number of registered runners was once again for the 5 km distance - 13 387, whereas the medium and long distances have experienced a significant rise in the number of participants - 10 km joined 6570 athletes, half-marathon - 4275, and the classic marathon distance – 1699 athletes.
The fastest marathon runner among men – Haile Tolossa Bekuma (Ethiopia) completed the 42195 metres long distance in Riga City in 02:12:28 setting a new record in Riga marathon, whereas the fastest athlete among women was Eshetu Deme Meseret (Ethiopia) with a result of 02:37:03. The best of Latvian athletes was Valērijs Žolnerovičs, who finished in 02:14:39, which is only 6 seconds slower than his own Latvian marathon record. We congratulate Valērijs with the great result and we believe he will be able to beat the Latvian record next year in Riga! Among women the fastest Latvian was Kitija Valtere, who finished in 02:58:12. Both Latvian athletes were awarded the Mayor's Cup and money prizes.
The winners of half-marathon were Latvian – Jānis Girgensons among men with a result of 1:06:20, and, as already expected, the leader among women was Jeļena Prokopčuka with a result of 1:13:24. Winners of the 10 km distance were Mārtiņš Jocis (Latvia) with a result of 00:32:13, whereas among women – Ilona Marhele (Latvia) with a result of 00:36:23. The largest number of participants was registered for the 5km distance - a total of 13 387 runners. Similar as in the previous year the first three places for the 5km distance were once again taken by Latvians. Among men the fastest runner with a result of 14 minutes and 41 second was Dmitrijs Serjogins. Among women the fastest was Līga Girgensone with a result 00:18:02.
